We are getting closer to our kitchen install date, and I am getting extremely nervous and excited. Most of the materials have been selected, and now we are in the “hurry up and wait” phase. All of the cabinetry and granite slabs have been ordered, but we are going to wait until the middle of May to get started with the construction. We had a pow-wow with the construction team, and we told them that we would be throwing our daughter’s 1st birthday party at our house on May 13th. They told us that they potentially could be done by that date, but if one item was delayed at all, our house would be a construction site during Madeline’s birthday party. We will have a lot of friends and family in town, so the last thing I want is to have no kitchen during this time period. They strongly suggested that we wait until the following Monday to begin construction, and I GREATLY appreciated their honesty. Although it would have been nice to have everything completed for the party, we decided that it was not worth the risk. Plus, this delay gives us a little bit of time to find a faucet that we love. 🙂
Here are some of the materials that we have selected:
Above is a picture of the actual two slabs of granite that will be used for all of the countertops. I loved the swirl patterns that were featured throughout, and I also really liked the color. It is called “St. Lucia,” and has a lot of grey in it. I really wanted the look of Carrara marble, while still having the durability of a material that would stand up to heavy use. We cook a lot, so the vendor strongly suggested that we stay away from marble (due to staining). The slab yard that we visited also had a tile shop attached, which was fantastic! If you are looking to re-do your kitchen, I would suggest to go to places where they sell multiple types of items (countertops, sinks, tiles, etc…). It makes it so much easier when you can do everything in one shop. We were actually able to find a tile that coordinated very well with the slabs in house, so this eliminated the need for us to go anywhere else that day. Yay!!! This made our lives much easier, which made this momma HAPPY!!. Here is the tile that we went with:
It is really pretty in person, and it goes really well with the granite! We were actually able to take the sample and hold it up to the real life slabs, to ensure that everything tied together. This is an extra bonus of doing everything under one roof.
If you are thinking of redoing your kitchen, remember that little ones cannot go into granite yards. We were basically forced to bring Miss Madeline with us, because we live nowhere near family. However, we made it work by taking turns holding her in the showroom versus going and looking at the slabs (it is all about teamwork in our household – LOL). This is how Dada kept Maddie entertained while Mommy went looking: 🙂
While I am not a huge proponent of a lot of screen time for little ones, we did made an exception during this instance! 🙂
Stay tuned for more posts on our kitchen progress. It has been a long and expensive journey, but we think it will be well worth the effort!
