Great Places To Take Your Donations

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind while ridding your home of clutter – while you are clearing, please remember to donate your items, versus just throwing them away!  Also, while it is easier to take everything to one place, you can really help out a variety of organizations if you take a little extra time and identify multiple charities that accept donations.  Here are a few ideas of places who would love to have your goodies you no longer need in your own home:

Renovation Items – Habitat For Humanity Restore

This is a great place to donate all of those items that you have replaced during your home renovation projects!  If you have read my other posts, then you know that Bradley and I have gone through an EXTENSIVE renovation in our current house.  This has created a fantastic opportunity for us to donate a lot of home materials to Habitat.  Click here, here and here to read more on what we have done to our home so far.

We completed a project on Madeline’s nursery closet prior to her being born (link HERE), so we had an extra set of doors that we were able to donate!  🙂  I would like to do this same project in our other rooms, which means we will have more doors to donate in the future.  Yay!

You can take appliances to Habitat too, which is fantastic!

Prom & Formal Dresses – Cinderella’s Closet 

If we all take a long and hard look at our closets, I would be willing to bet that most of us have A LOT of prom dresses, bridesmaids dresses, etc that we will never wear again.  If this is the case, then I highly suggest taking them out of your closet and giving them to a young girl who would LOVE to have them.  A great organization is Cinderella’s Closet, who takes gently used formal gowns and gives them to young ladies who would not otherwise be able to afford a prom dress.  I think that this is an amazing cause, and I would strongly urge you to look and see if they have a local chapter near where you live!

New & Gently Used Baby Items – Church missions for mothers in need

When you get pregnant, you will most likely be gifted much more stuff than you will ever be able to use.  Although it is smart to hold back some of the more gender neutral items for future babies, there is a good chance that you will still have much more than you need.  Rather than letting all of this great stuff gather dust in your own home, I suggest you donating it to other mothers who are not as blessed.  A great place to donate your items to is your local church, especially if they have an outreach program for other mothers.  For example, I received A TON of baby sleep sacks, so I was able to donate several to my church when they were collecting supplies for local mothers.  I also had WAY TOO MANY sippy cups, so I donated many of those too.  I have mentioned before that once you find a cup or bottle that you like, stick with that one kind, so all of those lids match!!  If you have a few extra cups with differing lids, then consider donating them to other mothers who don’t have the luxury of choosing a type of cup.  🙂

Clothes – Local women’s shelters

Typically, everybody immediately thinks of dropping off their items to their local Goodwill (which is a fantastic organization).  I just ask that you please remember that there are other organizations that would LOVE to have your clothes too!  A great place to build a relationship with is your local domestic violence shelter.  We were proud board members of one when we lived in South Georgia, and we witnessed a huge need for clothing, especially since many of the families leave their situation in a hurry.  Please look in your local area, and find organizations who take clothing donations (most of them do).  There are also a lot of children’s homes and other forms of shelters who would be happy to take your clothes as well!

In summary, when clearing out your clutter, please remember to donate your items to those in need.  I encourage you to think outside of the box a little bit, and find a variety of organizations for your donations.  You will be so happy that you did!
