Happy Fall, Y’all! Now that we are stepping into the last quarter of the year, it is A GREAT TIME to clear unnecessary items out of your home. You will be acquiring A LOT of new items over the next few months, so it is time to free up some space in those closets! Make sure you clear out some space before bringing more stuff inside! Although this may seem a little daunting, with a little effort, you can absolutely do it. Set yourself up with a cleaner and more organized home before the crazy holiday season begins!
Here are my current Top 5 Items To Clear Out Of Your Home This Fall:
Pens & pencils – How many times have you gone to look for a pen, found one, discovered that it didn’t work and PUT IT BACK in your cup (versus throwing it away)? I must admit that I have done this on multiple occasions – lol. Stop the insanity and get these things out of your house! Start going through your markers, pens, pencils, highlighters and whatever else you can find. You probably just bought a lot of these items during the back to school season, so make sure and get the bad ones out. Even if they do all work, do you really need fifty red pens? 🙂 If you find that you have too many of one item, consider donating them to a school or library. They will be very happy to have your extra supplies.
Socks – Does anybody else have a sock monster in their house who eats only one sock? This includes baby socks, which are particularly easy to lose, since they are so small. Do yourself a favor and wash all of the socks in your house. Put them in one place and pair them all together. Once you are certain that there isn’t an extra sock lurking somewhere, get rid of the unmatched socks. It will make the future laundry process so much less irritating and stressful when everything has a match.
Toys – With the holiday season rapidly approaching, your child (if they are fortunate) is probably going to get more toys. Before those closets and rooms get too crazy, go through and rid yourself of toys they have outgrown or no longer enjoy. If you need extra funds for the holidays, then you can host an impromptu yard sale! Another great thing to do is to donate those toys to a shelter! A lot of local non-profits would be more than happy to have your toys, so please keep them in mind when you are clearing out those items. There is no sense in having something sit and gather dust in your home when another child could be using it!!! You will be helping a local family while also freeing up space in your own home. I call that a win-win!
Clothes – With all of the back to school shopping that just happened, your closets are probably about to explode from being too full. This is the time to go through those closets and get rid of the items that your children (or you) have outgrown. If you haven’t worn an item in a long time, then get rid of it! You can plan a yard sale, give them to other parents, or donate your items. For suggestions on where to take your donations, click HERE.
Holiday Decor – This one is HUGE, because you know that you are about to bring in a lot of new stuff for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Do yourself a favor, and clear out space for these new items! Make sure and take everything that you have out, so you don’t accidentally re-buy things you already own!!!! For more on this thought, check out a post I wrote HERE. If you no longer like the decor and aren’t going to use it, GET RID OF IT (wreaths, half-used candles, etc…). If your items are in bad shape (bows that have accidentally been crushed, melted candles, etc…), then throw them away. If your items are in decent shape, consider selling or donating them to a local charity. You are about to be very tempted by all of the new decor that is appearing in stores, and you are going to create massive amounts of clutter in your home if you don’t free up some room. Trust me on this one, because I am speaking from experience. 🙂
